Staying Home for Comfort ♥ Movie Night In

Good morning, lovely readers!

Yesterday, I shared my most favorite cozy bookish companions that are on my reading list for this autumn. I have decided to make the weekends during my October series a bit set apart from the weekdays. On Saturdays and Sundays I want to feature different cozy things to enjoy, so yesterday it was books and today it's movies.

I was never much of a movie person, but over the last few years that has changed. The problem wasn't that I did't like watching movies, but that I just couldn't find any that I really loved. And as with most things, movies are a seasonal thing to me, too There are specific movies that I make sure to watch during the autumn or winter months, and sometimes, both. Some of these take place in autumn or winter, others focus on the goodness of home and blessing of family, and others are just cozy or magical. But for whatever reason, I consider these movies "must watches" for a cozy movie night in!

Little Women

Autumn with the March sisters just seems right somehow, don't you think? The heavy emphasis on family and beautiful setting of home and old-fashioned charm of this story makes it about as cozy as you can get. In our home, we love the 1994 version, which is the one I grew up with, but a newer favorite is the BBC mini-series that came out a few years ago. We did watch the 2019 version over the summer, but really did not like it. Watching these old time movies really awakens a nostalgia within my heart for those simpler days when folks' had morals and values that are, sadly, no longer the norm. And, there is also a bit of a whimsical feel to these movies and an invitation to rekindle your imagination and delight in the ordinary.

Anne of Green Gables

The Anne movies have much of the same vibe and tone for me as Little Women does. The magical, whimsical, rekindling the imagination, delighting in nature and cherishing the goodness of home...it's all there. And the scenery of Prince Edward Island is just so dreamy. My favorites are the first two in the trio made by Sullivan Entertainment. I did not grow up with Anne, but rather discovered her in my early twenties. And it's been a truly lovely gift to get to know her as an adult...there are so many lessons we could take from her.

Harry Potter

October just wouldn't be October without watching at least one movie from the Harry Potter series. It's kind of become a tradition in our home...curling up on the couch with mugs of hot chocolate and adventuring to Hogwarts for the evening. These movies have that autumnal, cozy feel along with the mysterious, magical side that really comes alive this time of year.

Halloweentown

These are the movies of my childhood. Every October growing up, we would watch the first three movies leading up to Halloween. And now, even though I'm in my mid-twenties, I still love these. They are cute and magical and bring out the inner child in all of us.

You've Got Mail

Last year was the first time I watched this movie after hearing about it for years. And it was absolutely every bit as wonderful as I had heard. It somehow feels like the perfect autumn movie...everything about it is just so charming, especially the fact that the main backdrop for the movie is a quaint bookshop. Of course, the only thing that would make it better would have been if there really was a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils! {{winks}}

The Sound of Music

While not specificallyy an autumn or cozy movie, it has always felt so cozy to me. A favorite of mine since childhood, it's like revisiting an old friend everytime I watch this one.

The Wizard of Oz

The other favorite of min when I was a child, this seems like a splendid watch for autumn. I haven't seen this one is ages, so I think it's time to remedy that real soon.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I fell in love with this movie earlier this year and now literally can't get enough of it. It is such an enchanting, charming, lovely story full of friends- new and old, books and storytelling, feasting and letters traveling back and forth between kindred spirits. The first time I watched this one, I didn't care for it, but I'm so glad I gave it a second chance...because now it's a top favorite!

Cozy Mysteries

My mom, sister and I love cozy mysteries...nothing gory or scary, but just a good mystery. We love seeing who can solve it first and spend the entire movie sharing our guesses and theories and comparing notes. Our favorites are on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel...Aurora Teagarden, Garage Sale Mysteries, Hannah Swensen, and Chronicle Mystery series. There's nothing better than an evening sitting in our sunroom, snuggled under a warm blanket, trying to solve a mystery alongside our favorite TV sleuths!
