what I love about snow

What I love about the snow…

❄️I love how quiet the world is when it snows. I’ve read that snow absorbs sound which makes the earth quiet when it’s snowy. I really love the peaceful quiet!

❄️I love how snow feels soft under my feet.

❄️I love how snow adds a gentle look and feel to the earth. The bare, brittle branches in winter often look harsh and sharp to me. Snow softens everything.

❄️I love how snow makes the air smell fresh and crisp and clean and crystal clear. It’s almost as if snow purifies the earth.

❄️I love how snow brings out the child in people. Building snowmen, making snow angels, having snowball fights, just enjoying the snow…you’re never too old to have fun.

❄️I love how beautiful snow is. Winter truly is a favorite season of mine and snow makes it even more dear in my heart.

❄️I love the layers that snowy days make me wear. Hand knit scarves, mittens, warm hats, thick socks. Yes, please.

❄️I love how snow inspires me to cook comforting, warming foods. I do this all winter long anyway, but there’s something special about making an extra comforting meal on a snowy evening.

❄️I love how snow makes my home feel extra cozy and like the true haven it is.

❄️I love how snow makes everything feel magical! Snow is the stuff of fairy tales and confirms my belief that magic exists in this world.

❄️Simply put…I just love snow!

it's a marshmallow world ♥ wintry quote collection

 Warm greetings, dear readers!

Our mid-January was quite frigid! The best part, though...

WE GOT SNOW!!

We spent over a week with temps well under freezing, with wind chills in the single digits and even some nights in the negatives. It was the perfect winter weather...I'll admit that I loved every minute of it. It called for extra layers of clothing and blankets at night. Warm, thick socks, hand-knit scarves and gloves and hats along with my warmest coat and boots every time I went outdoors. We enjoyed several walks around our neighborhood and just admired all the wintry beauty. (You won't see us out walking in the hot, humid temps of summer, but cold, frigid temps in winter...yes, please. With appropriate clothing and only for about 15 minutes, of course.) I made a special meal plan for this wintry week full of comforting, cozy, warming foods...so we pretty much ate like a hobbit, which was perfectly fine with us. The snow lasted for just over a week, with businesses and schools being closed nearly the entire time due to dangerous roads and driving conditions. It was a week spent entirely at home and this homebody here absolutely. loved. it.

I wanted to share a few photos of our marshmallow wintry white world as well as some of my most beloved wintry quotes that I have collected over the last while.

Pour a cup of something warm and comforting, get cozy, and enjoy...

Everything is magical when it snows. Everything looks pretty...
It's just my favorite time of year. The whole world changes color.
Flakes, flurries, swirls, crystals, whatever form it comes in, I'll take it.
We go back, snow and me, we have a beautiful history.
Sleigh rides, ice skating, snow ball fights. I'll even take curling.
God, I love curling. Hot cocoa, hot totes, best time of the year.

To this day, I am never happier than when there is frost on the roof and a fire in the hearth. I have always preferred snow underfoot to sand between my toes. I love the crackle of winter. The snap of dry twigs underfoot, boots crunching on frozen grass, a fire spitting in the hearth, ice thawing on a pond, the sound of unwrapping a Christmas present from its paper. The innate crispness of the season appeals to me, like newly fallen snow, frosted hedges, the first fresh page of a new diary. Yes, there is softness in the cold months, too, the voluminous jumpers and woolly hats, the steam rising from soup served in a deep bowl, the light from a single candle and the much-loved scarf that would feel like a burden at any other time of year.

It's like waking up in the warm embrace of a soft blanket. Under veils of white lace. Settling like powdered sugar. A place where magic and warmth coexist.

~ Poems for the Moon ~

I don't mind staying it at all. I realize that, for plenty of people, it feels like a brutal restriction of their freedom, but it suits me down to the ground. Winter is a quiet house in lamplight, stepping into the garden to see bright stars on a clear night...It is warming the teapot and making cups of bitter cocoa...It is reading quietly, and passing away the afternoon twilight watching movies. It is thick socks and the bundle of a cardigan.

~ Katherine May ~

It is just as good to come in. You stamp to shake the snow from your boots. The flakes of snow on your coat melt instantly. Your glasses steam up. You close the door and thank God you remembered to put the hall light on a timer. You hang up your coat, tug off your boots and light the fire. You will probably put the kettle on or pour yourself a hot drink. Not so much as a way to get warm, more to welcome yourself home. Home means more to us in cold weather. Making ourselves comfortable is a duty. Making friends and family comfortable is an art. 'Come in.' Two short words, heavy with meaning. Step out of the big, bad, wet world and into my home. You'll be safe here, toasty and well fed. 'Come in.' They are two of the loveliest words to say and to hear.

Wishing you days of magical sparkly beauty and evenings of cozy home comforts, dear kindred spirits.

... a collection of little things to delight ...

♥ The Mallorca Files ♥

After Christmas, my sister found this series on BritBox and we binged it over just a few days. We loved it! The setting is gorgeous, the characters are funny and the storylines grab your attention. I've seen that the third season is (hopefully!) supposed to be coming out later this year and we absolutely cannot wait! Highly recommend!

♥ Mushroom Cookies ♥

We have been focusing on making healthy treats instead of sweets full of refined sugars and such. My sister has done a fabulous job of finding several recipes that use bananas as the sweetener. And I was excited to find this recipe on a blog that I enjoy learning from. These are a simple cookie sweetened with honey, but boy, are they good! They also have mushroom powder in them, which is something I've been adding to my daily drinks/meals. I love using reishi mushroom powder in this recipe. And finally, before I baked these cookies, I placed a dark chocolate chunk in the center of each cookie dough ball. The flavor was so yummy! (I'm also trying to get used to dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, as dark chocolate has good health benefits.)

♥ Jo Dee Messina ~ Heads Carolina, Tails California ♥

I've been loving listening to 90's and early 2000s (and some 2010s) country music. I lived on this music as a teenager and for so long now, I've felt embarrassed and whatever for liking this music. But now I say, who cares! I can listen to whatever I like! And I am having the most fun listening to these songs that bring back sweet memories for me. This is one of them...if you want something fun to listen to, give this one a listen. This happy music makes my heart feel so alive!

♥ lavender, rosemary, and geranium ♥

I have been making this essential oil roller blend for a few years now and it may well be my favorite. I simply do equal parts of lavender, rosemary, and geranium oils and then fill the roller bottle up with fractionated coconut oil. It smells divine and I love it! All of these oils have calming, relaxing, soothing benefits. I don't wear perfume because this smells so lovely! And best of all, it's not full of crappy ingredients that are unhealthy for you.

♥ Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce ♥

I have a small stack of books that I'm currently reading. I hope to share more on them soon. But in the meantime, I'll share about this story that is charming me in every way. I'm listening to the audiobook whilst I read along with the book. This is my very first audiobook experience and it's read by Anna Popplewell (Susan Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia) and she really does a phenomenal job making the story come to life and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Let's hope it continues to be wonderful!

What's delighting you currently, kindred spirits?

✨🎄✨🎄✨ a cozy homey christmas at shady cottage ✨🎄✨🎄✨

Dearest kindred spirits,

I am ever so excited to finally share my 2023 Christmas Home Tour with you. I apologize for it taking so long to get finished. But I am quite pleased with how it all turned out and, even though there are Christmas decorations in this post, just think of this as a cozy, wintry home tour, as well. Though, to be honest, I love watching Christmas videos and movies all winter long. So I hope you enjoy...

This post contains quite a few photos, but if I may, I would recommend watching the vlog I made first. Then you can come back and see close up photos of different spaces in our home. I did not share all of our decorations, but I did share the main parts as well as some of our favorites. Also, you will notice that some of the shelves are a bit full of decorations and that is because we have cats. We have to be very strategic and careful in how we decorate, and no matter how careful we are, we always end up having to move a few things here and there. You will also notice one of the bookshelves has cat toys on it instead of decorations. That is done in hopes of distracting our kitty babies with their own toys and hopefully to maybe leave the decorations alone. Does it work? Sometimes. Ha!

So without any further waiting...

I am pleased to present to you my 2023 Christmas Home Tour video. I warmly invite you (and highly recommend) getting a nice cup of hot tea or cocoa and settling in your coziest spot with a blanket and a lit candle, and perhaps a cookie or two, and just getting really comfy, and consider yourself a welcomed friend into our home for a bit of wintry (& Christmas!) cheer...

 our home

Welcome to Shady Cottage, lovelies!

A funny little side note about our garland on the front door...
this garland is from my grandparents' old house. They've been gone for nearly a decade and hadn't lived in that house for about five years prior to that. It was sitting in a box in our attic all that time, with lights attached and all. This year, we decided to pull it out just to look at it for old time's sake and lo and behold, it worked! How crazy is that?!?! Who even knows how long those lights have been on there! My Grandpa probably put them on there so long ago...we were so giddy with how pretty it made our front door.

O Christmas tree

the kitchen

Our kitchen doesn't have the best lightning, so do please excuse the lighting in some of these pictures.

This year we made clove oranges for the first time and it was a real highlight of the season for us.

We also finally succeeded in making dried orange slices! I had tried a few times before only to have them all turn black once and then not dry out at all another time. This year we discovered a secret! Our dehydrator! I'm quite literally obsessed with them!

the living room

Fun fact: My Grandpa made this shelf from a picture frame probably nearly 60 or 70 years ago. Those candle holders on the wall were also from my grandparents' house.

Do excuse the lighting in these living room pictures. This room gets literally no natural light and has terrible overhead lighting. It makes for a cozy feel, but hard to get good pictures.

Do you see the kitty toys on the bottom right shelf?

We love having a cozy seasonal ambiance on in the background with nature sounds when we're just going about our day. They're so cozy, peaceful, and beautiful.

I dearly love decorating the mantle for each season and holiday...
this weekend I'll be decorating a winter mantle.
(Oh, and the gnomes will be sticking around all winter long!)

my bedroom

I made this star out of wooden beads a few years back, and boy, did it test my patience. I do love how it turned out, though.

My Christmas bookshelf...
I love keeping a few small decorations out on it all year long.

a New Year's song for you

To end this post, I can think of no other way than to send you off with one of the most beautiful renditions of Auld Lang Syne that I've ever heard. I love the simplicity and subtlety of this version and it just gives me all the feels. Not to mention, it's from one of my favorite musicians, Emmet Cahill.

Thank you ever so much, dear kindred spirits, for joining me for this Christmas home tour. I'm delighted that you came along!

May your day be filled with beautiful small moments, dearest ones...

Until next time,
E
